New 2023 SEER HVAC Standards

The Department of Energy is increasing the SEER ratings and requirements for AC units across the U.S., and these specific ratings slightly differ depending on the area where you reside. What Is SEER?

SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency rating, is utilized to determine the energy efficiency of AC units and heat pumps by dividing cooling BTU/h output by input wattage (BTU/Wh) over summer’s three-month period. The higher the SEER rating of a unit, the more efficient it is. The lowest SEER rating is 9, while the highest reaches 75, though, for most standard domestic units, a rating between 11 to 20 usually suffices. 

Illinois Updated SEER Requirements

Starting in January 2023, AC units and heat pumps must be rated by the DOE appendix M1 testing procedure, denoted as SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2. SEER requirements for the northern part of the U.S. are increasing from 13 to 14 for AC units and 14 to 15 for heat pumps. 

Energy-Efficient Requirements in Illinois

For Illinois residents, air conditioners and single-packaged units must adhere to the region’s minimum efficiencies and testing requirements to meet SEER2 standards. For homeowners in Illinois, it’s essential to keep these updated rating requirements in mind when purchasing new HVAC units and packages; however, any unit built before January 1, 2023, can still be installed on or after this date so long as said unit meets the requirements when manufactured.
