“Feelinggratitudeand notexpressingit is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” – William Arthur Ward

Thanksgiving provides an annual opportunity to reflect on all we’re grateful for. But showing gratitude should be more than a once-a-year occasion. Ways to express thankfulness don’t come to us easily, but the benefits of being thankful make the effort worthwhile.

Being Thankful Brings Benefits

People who make being thankful a daily habit tend to behappier and more optimistic. It also reduces negativity.

Try to think about one thing you’re thankful for every day. When you make being thankful a priority, it will eventually become second nature to you.

How to Practice Being Thankful

Here are five ways to practice being thankful every day:

  1. Write in a journal or drop “notes” in a Thankful Jar.

Purchase a small notebook and keep it handy. Take a few minutes each day to write down positive experiences or what you’re grateful for. If finding a few minutes each day is tough, write in your journal at the end of each week.

Or make a Thankful Jar and keep it handy. Then, as things happen, write them down on a small piece of paper and put the note back inside the jar.

What can you write down?

  • Small acts of kindness –
    • someone who paid for your coffee
    • someone who held the door open for you
    • a phone call from a friend
    • anote of appreciation you received, etc.
  • Fun activities
  • Business referrals
  • Good medical reports

Write down your moments of happiness as soon as they happen, or they will be easily forgotten. Then, look back and remember how much you have to be thankful for. Do this on Thanksgiving Day or whenever you experience tough times throughout the year.

  1. Put your appreciation into actionin person.

When anyone goes above and beyond for you in any way big or little, act on it. Treat them to lunch, coffee or dessert, for example.

Make it a point to interact with others in person as much as possible. When you make time for those who are important to you or your business, it can be endlessly rewarding.

  1. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

You know how nice it feels to be on the receiving end of a kind act. Treat others with the same level of courtesy and thoughtfulness you like to receive:

  • cheerfulness
  • kindness
  • patience
  • alistening ear

The next time you make coffee, offer coffee to someone else. Wash your dirty dishes at the office or at home instead of letting them sit inthe sink. If you see someone running toward a building entrance, hold the door.

  1. Stop complaining.

Terrible things happen. That’s life, and it’s natural to complain about each one. If you become impatient with someone who takes too long to pay or a driver who cuts you off, don’t complain. Every time you complain, you encourage negativity without a solution to the problem. Take a few deep breaths and look for something positive to focus your energy on instead.

  1. Develop a spirit of community.

It’s a fact: Volunteering does more for the volunteer than it does for those you are volunteering for.

Choose to volunteer for at least an hour or two eachmonth. Volunteering gives you something positive to focus on and is a great way to give back to the community.
