Celebrate an honest days work! Take a day off to spend with friends and family this Labor Day!
Labor Day – a day of rest from an honest days work.
Labor Day is a federal holiday celebrated annually on the first Monday of September. It typically marks the end of the summer season. Sorry, ladies, but wearing white shoes is now a fashion faux pas. Save those pretty white shoes for Easter, 2017.
Originally, it was organized to celebrate the strengths of labor associations and their contributions to the United States economy.
How an Honest Days Work is Celebrated in the United States
Many see Labor Day as the last chance to hit the road before the summer ends or hold outdoor events and activities. But most take a break from their labor and enjoy the rest. Labor Day celebrations can include organized fireworks displays, barbecues, picnics and public arts or sports events. The football season starts on or around Labor Day thus marking the beginning of the football season. Many teams play their first game of the season during the long 3-day weekend.
Chronology of Labor Day
The first Labor Day was held in 1882, but it became a federal holiday in 1894. The Central Labor Union wanted to create a holiday for workers. Originally Labor Day was intended to start with a parade for the public to appreciate the work of the trade and labor organizations and end with a festival for the local workers and their families. Later, the day included speeches from prominent men and women.
After the Civil War, the National Labor Union began a movement to reduce the working day from ten hours to eight hours. The group’s first congress met in 1866. Two years later, congress and six states passed an eight-hour legislation. In 1884, the National Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Assemblies called for a general strike on May 1, 1886. They wanted to force employers to observe the eight-hour day. In 1947, in the middle of the anti-Communist Cold War hysteria, the US Veterans of Foreign Wars declared May 1 as “Loyalty Day.” A joint session of Congress later made the pronouncement official.
