Tips to Prepare Your HVAC Unit for a Snowstorm

It’s January in Chicago, so that means the snow and cold weather are just getting started. It’s no secret that the cold weather can take a toll on your home, and specifically your HVAC system. Luckily, if you need furnace service near Bartlett, our team at Blue Frost Heating & Cooling is only a phone call away.

Here are some tips on how to ensure the snow and ice do not damage your HVAC system.

Insulate Vulnerable Pipes

If you have particular pipes that are prone to freezing, make sure you take the time to insulate them before a big snow storm hits. The process of doing so is easy; simply wrap them in insulation sleeves to keep them from freezing.

Clear Snow & Ice

If you have an outdoor unit, you’ll need to clear the snow and ice from the unit to help keep your home warm. Doing so will also reduce the number of repairs that you’ll need to make in the future. If too much snow builds up, it can cause the condensing unit and heat pumps to restrict their air flow. Too much ice and snow can also prevent the unit from defrosting, which will have an impact on its lifespan.

Turn Off Outdoor Water Lines

Ensure that your outdoor water lines to hoses and outdoor spigots are turned off.

Don’t Run Portable Generators Inside

Portable generators should always be run outside, as the internal engine can release CO. A buildup of CO can be dangerous to you and your family.

By following the above tips, you and your family will stay safe throughout the cold winter months!
