Think Before You Act

Those of you that have had me to your home know what a fan I am of poking fun at Married folks, because I am in that club myself. When doing a cooling load calculation I am sure to account for the heat generated by humans; putting one person in each bedroom, two in the master bedroom, and one on the couch…. just in case!

Well here is another opportunity to “work together” that has at least as good a chance of saving you big money as it does of getting some good old fashioned bickering going. If you have heard this tip from me before please forgive me, but it does save one basement each Spring:

Prior to using your garden hoses for the first time each season it is a good idea to check them for leaks. These leaks do not generally show up until the hose is turned on, so when there is a leak folks do not know it until after they have washed the entire car and the basement has taken on water for forty-five minutes.

Here is how you avoid this disaster: Have one person in the basement with the cordless phone while the other goes to each silcock on the cell phone. Test each unit with the hose attached and the sprayer off. This will pressurize the works and a leak will show up immediately.
