If you’ve already gotten a furnace repair in West Chicago and it’s not even December yet, you might be in for a long winter. Having a warm, cozy house to come home to is always ideal during the cold weather but seeing your heating bill every month can be scary. Not only is it a good idea to cut back on the amount of energy you use to save money on your heating bill, but it is good for the environment as well! Here are some ways to save money on your heating bill this winter.
Seal Your Chimney Flue
If you aren’t using your chimney, make sure that the chimney flue is closed. If you leave it open, it has a similar effect of leaving your windows open several inches. Warm air will flow out of your house while cool air will enter. This is an easy fix that can save a lot of money and energy.
Lower Your Thermostat
This may seem obvious but using a lower thermostat setting can have a large impact on your energy bill. You can save as much as 3 percent on your heating bill if you lower your thermostat one degree over a 24-hour period. Stock up on warm blankets and clothing so you are still comfortable when your thermostat is lower.
You may not reach for the fan during the winter, but if you set your fan on low and circulate the air towards the ceiling, it can help trapped warmer air circulate throughout the room.
