Rain, Rain Go Away…

With the past week’s soaking rains and more just around the corner, it’s time to make sure that you are doing all you can to prevent flooding in your basement and in your home.

When the ground has absorbed all it can, the water needs somewhere to go. So there are a few things that you can do to make sure the exterior and interior of your home stay safe this Spring

Tuck-Pointing

Check the pointing on exterior brick exterior walls. If there are gaps where moisture can seep through, you’ll want to make sure those are properly sealed.

Gutters

Make sure that your gutters are clear from debris. If you cleaned them in the fall, they should be OK. Make sure that water is draining at least three feet from the foundation. That may mean purchasing extenders to move the water from your home.

Interior Foundation Cracks

If there are interior cracks in your basement, they can be filled by using epoxy.

Check Your Sump Pump

Make sure your sump pump is in working order. Make sure the well is free from debris. You’ll also want to make sure that everything is plugged in and operating smoothly. There are a few other things you can do on a regular basis to keep your sump pump in working order. If you are unsure of what you are doing, you can always call a pro. Remember that it’s cheaper to fix or replace your sump pump now, than to repair damage to your basement.

Check Plumbing

Make sure the sewer and septic are clean – During heavy periods of rain and flooding, a clogged sewer can spell trouble. If your drains are not flowing smoothly, you can have them rooted out by a professional plumber.

Window Well Covers

You can buy window well covers that attach to the foundation, and cover the whole well. That makes for a better chance at keeping these areas dry. Keeping these areas free of rotting leaves and critters is not a bad idea either!
